The world of Top Boy is expanding considerably, with a prequel starring Barry Keoghan among two new series ordered from the acclaimed British crime universe. A second project will continue the world through Jaq, with Jasmine Jobson returning to the role.

The prequel, titled Jonny Boy, gives the franchise an opportunity to move backwards rather than simply extending its existing chronology. That approach can deepen an established fictional universe by exploring the people, relationships and circumstances that shaped the world audiences already know.

Keoghan’s involvement immediately gives the project considerable international visibility. His ability to move between vulnerable, unpredictable and threatening characters makes the combination particularly intriguing for a franchise built around complicated personalities operating within morally difficult environments.

The simultaneous development of a Jaq-focused series demonstrates a broader strategy. Instead of treating Top Boy as a completed programme, its characters and mythology are being approached as the foundation of a potentially larger television universe.

That model has become increasingly important within streaming. A successful series can generate value far beyond its original run when individual characters, unexplored periods or connected stories provide credible opportunities for expansion.

For Top Boy, however, maintaining authenticity will remain essential. The franchise developed its reputation through a grounded depiction of community, ambition, violence and survival. Expanding the universe without losing that identity will determine whether these new chapters feel necessary rather than simply familiar.
