Pragyan Ojha has become chair of India's men's senior selection committee, while Ramesh Powar joins the five-member panel after a unanimous recommendation by the Cricket Advisory Committee. Ojha takes the chair on seniority measured by Test appearances. The complete group now consists of Ojha, Shiv Sundar Das, RP Singh, Ajay Ratra and Powar, bringing Ajit Agarkar's tenure as chairman to an end. The reshaped committee arrives at a demanding point, with workload management, succession planning and preparation for major international events all requiring decisions that extend beyond one squad announcement.

What Pragyan Ojha selection committee chair Confirms

Ojha's elevation follows the committee's seniority convention and gives the former India spinner formal responsibility for presenting and defending collective selection decisions.

Powar played two Tests and 31 one-day internationals, experience that gives him direct knowledge of elite cricket even though his international playing career was relatively compact.

His coaching record spans India Women, Mumbai and Gujarat, along with work at the Centre of Excellence, adding perspectives that go beyond his role as a former off-spinner.

The vacancy had been advertised on 6 October, with applications closing at 5pm IST on 14 October. Shortlisted candidates were to face personal interviews after screening. The role covered senior men's selection across Tests, one-day internationals and T20 internationals, rather than a position attached to only one format. Its brief also included identifying emerging talent and strengthening the pool of players available to the national side.

The eligibility rules offered three routes: at least seven Test appearances, 30 first-class matches, or a combination of ten ODIs and twenty first-class matches. Applicants also needed to have retired at least five years earlier. A cumulative five years on a cricket committee under the board's rules made a person ineligible. These were qualification routes, not an instruction that every applicant had to meet all three playing thresholds.

Beyond picking squads, the advertised duties included watching domestic and international cricket, attending team meetings, contributing quarterly performance evaluations to the Apex Council, speaking to the media about selection and choosing captains for each format.

Seniority by Test appearances was also the stated basis for Agarkar's appointment as chair on 4 July 2023. That recruitment was handled by a Cricket Advisory Committee comprising Sulakshana Naik, Ashok Malhotra and Jatin Paranjape. Agarkar arrived with 26 Tests, 191 ODIs and four T20 internationals, alongside a substantial domestic career. He had also served as Mumbai's senior chief selector and worked in a coaching role with Delhi Capitals. Ojha's elevation therefore follows a previously used chairmanship criterion; it should not be confused with a new contest or vote among the five selectors.

The panel named in July 2023 included Shiv Sundar Das, Subroto Banerjee, Salil Ankola and Sridharan Sharath alongside Agarkar. The latest five names are a current committee list, not evidence that every member was appointed together in October 2026.

Powar's coaching tenure with India Women included an Asia Cup victory and a Commonwealth Games silver medal, adding tournament experience to the playing credentials already outlined.

Why Pragyan Ojha selection committee chair Matters

A five-member panel is intended to combine regional observation and shared judgment, reducing the risk that national selection depends too heavily on one individual's preferences.

The committee must balance immediate results with longer planning, especially when established players need rest and younger performers require meaningful opportunities rather than token call-ups.

Domestic cricket observation will be central because selection credibility depends on sustained performance being noticed across formats, venues and stages of the season.

The Wider Context Around Pragyan Ojha selection committee chair

Ojha's public communication will matter when difficult omissions occur, since clear reasoning can protect players from speculation without revealing private medical or tactical information.

Powar's experience coaching women's and domestic teams may help the panel evaluate development environments, fitness progression and how players respond to different responsibilities.

The new group also inherits questions about format specialisation, an issue made harder by overlapping schedules and the different skills demanded by Tests, ODIs and T20 cricket.

What Comes Next for Pragyan Ojha selection committee chair

Selection is never isolated from workload data, team management and medical advice, so the committee's authority operates inside a larger performance system.

Agarkar's departure closes one leadership phase but does not automatically overturn every recent policy, and continuity may remain visible in several squad choices.

The first selections under Ojha's chairmanship will offer the clearest evidence of priorities, yet the committee should ultimately be judged over multiple series rather than one headline decision.
