Ryan Gosling Developing Live-Action ‘Flintstones’ Movie Centred on a Grown-Up Bamm-Bamm.

One of animation’s longest-running properties could be heading toward another major live-action reinvention, with Ryan Gosling developing and producing a new Flintstones movie centred around an adult Bamm-Bamm Rubble.

Choosing Bamm-Bamm as the central character is particularly interesting because it allows the film to use the recognisable world of Bedrock without simply reproducing another Fred and Wilma Flintstone story. The character was introduced as the extraordinarily strong adopted son of Barney and Betty Rubble and later developed a relationship with Pebbles Flintstone.

Moving the timeline forward could provide the filmmakers with an opportunity to explore what Bedrock looks like through another generation. That approach can retain familiar characters and visual mythology while creating enough narrative distance from earlier adaptations to establish a different identity.

The project also illustrates the continuing value Hollywood places on established intellectual property. Characters capable of remaining recognisable across several generations offer studios an immediate cultural foundation, but familiarity alone does not guarantee that a contemporary adaptation will work.

The Flintstones presents a particularly unusual creative opportunity because its prehistoric world has always been built around playful versions of modern life. A new film can therefore reinterpret technology, relationships and contemporary culture through the franchise’s exaggerated Stone Age perspective.

With Gosling involved behind the project, the adult Bamm-Bamm concept provides a potentially unexpected route back into Bedrock. Its success will depend on whether the film can transform decades of nostalgia into a comedy with enough personality to connect with audiences who may never have grown up with the original series.
