Tenzing With Tom Hiddleston and Willem Dafoe to Open Zurich Film Festival.

BY SUYASH PACHAURI

A cinematic retelling of one of mountaineering’s greatest achievements is preparing for a major festival spotlight as Tenzing has been selected to open the Zurich Film Festival. The prestigious opening slot gives the historical adventure a significant international platform and places it directly in front of critics, filmmakers, distributors and global industry professionals.

Directed by Jennifer Peedom, the film tells the true story of legendary Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay and the historic first confirmed ascent of Mount Everest in 1953. The achievement became one of the defining moments in twentieth-century exploration, with Tenzing’s extraordinary journey remaining inseparable from the history of Everest and modern mountaineering.

Tom Hiddleston and Willem Dafoe are part of the project, bringing considerable international visibility to the film. While the Everest story has been explored numerous times through documentaries and dramatic cinema, centering the narrative around Tenzing provides an opportunity to revisit the historic expedition through the perspective of the Sherpa mountaineer whose courage, experience and contribution were fundamental to its success.

Opening a major international festival provides Tenzing with a powerful launch platform and could establish early momentum for the film as the international festival season develops. Beyond its spectacular mountaineering setting, the project has the opportunity to present Tenzing Norgay not simply as part of an extraordinary historical achievement, but as the central figure of his own remarkable story.
