Story & Screenplay

The Bhootnii revolves around a college campus “virgin tree” believed to grant love. When Shantanu (Sunny Singh), heartbroken, prays to it, he awakens the spirit of Karishma (Mouni Roy), a girl whose love once went unfulfilled. She ensnares Shantanu, soon turning her fury toward his true love Ananya (Palak Tiwari). The campus descends into chaos, and it falls on a mystical Baba (Sanjay Dutt) to save the lovers from the vengeful ghost.

Unfortunately, the story by Sidhaant Sachdev is shallow and inconsistent. The “virgin tree” concept itself feels bizarre and unconvincing. The romance between Shantanu and Ananya lacks depth, leaving the emotional core hollow. The screenplay (by Vankush Arora and Sachdev) is confused, repetitive, and often unintentionally funny. Baba’s interventions, instead of creating awe, come across as laughable. A handful of comic dialogues land well, but otherwise the writing is dull.

Performances

  • Sanjay Dutt (Baba) looks disinterested and delivers a mechanical performance.

  • Mouni Roy is decent as the spirit Karishma, but the role offers her little range.

  • Sunny Singh puts in a fair effort as Shantanu.

  • Palak Tiwari is average as Ananya, lacking conviction.

  • Nick (as Sahil) stands out with good comic timing.

  • Aasif Khan is impressive in his limited role as Nasir.

The rest of the supporting cast, including Harsh Vardhan Singh Deo, Meherzan Mazda, Narendra Bedi, Priyanka Bedi, and others, offer routine performances.

Direction

Sidhaant Sachdev fails to lift his weak script with direction. The film lacks both tension and atmosphere, crucial for horror. Scenes intended to scare end up either silly or confusing.

Music & Technical Aspects

  • Music (Nikhil Malik, Shabbir Ahmed, Mukund Suryawanshi) is tuneful in parts, with songs like Mahakaal Mahakaali and Rang Laaga standing out mildly.

  • Lyrics (by Shabbir Ahmed, Ajay Pal, Vaishnavi Thakur, among others) are serviceable.

  • Ganesh Acharya’s choreography is flashy but adds little.

  • Amar Mohile’s background score is functional but unmemorable.

  • Cinematography (Santosh Thundiyil) is neat.

  • VFX & CGI are tacky, reducing impact in key sequences.

  • Editing (Bunty Nagi) is loose, further dragging the weak narrative.

  • Production design and art direction are ordinary.

Final Verdict

The Bhootnii is a half-baked, childish horror drama that neither scares nor entertains. With poor writing, weak direction, and tacky execution, it has little chance at the box office. A few songs and stray comic moments aside, the film is a forgettable affair.

Box Office: Very weak prospects.
