Global Bollywood & Director’s Daily Clapboard

There are films that entertain, there are films that surprise, and then there are films that expand a cinematic universe. Alpha belongs to the fouth category. Yash Raj Films’ latest entry in the Spy Universe attempts something different by putting two women at the center of an espionage thriller while keeping the larger universe alive with surprises, connections, and a few whistle-worthy moments.

Directed on a grand scale and mounted with the signature YRF style, Alpha is a film that works best when it focuses on its emotional conflict, mystery, and action-driven first half.

While the second half becomes comparatively predictable and slower, the film still manages to remain engaging enough for a one-time watch.

STORY

Without revealing major spoilers, Alpha revolves around an internal conflict within the system itself. This is not a conventional India-versus-Pakistan war story. Instead, it explores betrayal, hidden identities, and the consequences of power when it falls into the wrong hands.

At the center of the story lies the concept of the “Alpha Serum” a formula that has the potential to change lives and strengthen soldiers. The film cleverly presents the serum in a way that feels fictional yet not entirely impossible in today’s technologically advancing world.

The narrative also carries a strong emotional angle involving family, sacrifice, and the lengths a person can go to save a loved one. These emotional beats give the film a much-needed human touch amidst all the espionage and action.

The screenplay constantly raises questions in the first half, making the audience curious about the intentions of various characters and the secrets hidden beneath the surface.

SCREENPLAY & WRITING

The biggest strength of Alpha is undoubtedly its first half.

The setup is gripping, the mystery keeps unfolding, and the interval block is one of the film’s strongest moments. The writing keeps you invested and makes you wonder where the story is headed.

However, the second half loses some momentum. Once the major secrets begin to unfold, many of the twists become predictable. There are moments where you can easily guess what is going to happen next, and the film proceeds exactly in that direction.

This predictability affects the overall impact of the narrative.

Nevertheless, the emotional beats and action sequences ensure that the film never completely loses its grip on the audience.

DIRECTION

The director Shiv Rawail deserves appreciation for attempting something fresh within the YRF Spy Universe.

Creating a spy thriller led by female protagonists while still maintaining the larger universe’s identity is not an easy task.

The film looks grand, stylish, and cinematic.

The action sequences are mounted on a large scale, the world-building feels authentic, and the director successfully creates several theatrical moments that are likely to receive loud reactions from the audience.

The film’s pacing could have been tighter in the latter half, but overall, the direction remains confident and visually appealing.

ACTING & PERFORMANCE

Alia Bhatt

Alia Bhatt as Sita gives one of her most physically demanding performances.

She completely commits herself to the character and brings intensity to every scene. Her rough and-tough body language and aggressive dialogue delivery perfectly suit the “Alpha” persona.

The actress has clearly put in tremendous effort into the action sequences, and it shows on screen. She carries a major portion of the film on her shoulders and delivers an impressive performance.

Sharvari

Sharvari as Durga proves to be an excellent addition to the YRF Spy Universe. She complements Alia’s energy very well and contributes significantly to the film’s emotional and action-driven moments.

The chemistry between the two female leads works effectively and becomes one of the film’s biggest strengths.

Bobby Deol

Bobby Deol as Fateh Singh once again proves why he has become one of the most exciting antagonists in recent years.

Every time he appears on screen, he brings an entirely different aura with him. His expressions, dialogue delivery, and screen presence make him a compelling villain.

There is a particular close-up scene during a crucial emotional moment that beautifully showcases his acting brilliance.

Even in a negative role, audiences are likely to enjoy watching him.

Anil Kapoor

Anil Kapoor as Col Kaul delivers a restrained and mature performance.

He doesn’t rely on loud moments or dramatic expressions. Instead, he brings stability and emotional depth to his character. His scenes are performed with remarkable sincerity and add weight to the narrative.

Dia Mirza

Though her role isn’t extensive, Dia Mirza as Janki leaves an emotional impact and plays an important role in shaping the motivations of the story.

THE SURPRISE FACTOR

One of the biggest crowd-pleasing moments in the film is a special appearance that beautifully connects Alpha to the larger YRF Spy Universe.

Without revealing spoilers, this cameo is likely to generate loud cheers and whistles in theatres.

The appearance serves as a reminder that the YRF Spy Universe can bring together its heroes at any point, opening exciting possibilities for future films and crossover events.

This moment adds tremendous value to the theatrical experience.

ACTION & CHOREOGRAPHY

The action choreography is one of the film’s highlights.

The hand to hand combat sequences are well designed and maintain intensity throughout. The film also features several large-scale action moments that feel cinematic and worthy of the big screen.

The action involving the female leads particularly stands out because it feels grounded and believable within the world created by the film.

MUSIC & BACKGROUND SCORE

The film’s songs are beautifully choreographed and fit naturally within the narrative.

However, it is the background score that deserves special appreciation. The music significantly enhances the emotional and action sequences and helps create several goosebumps-inducing moments.

The score also elevates the surprise appearances and key confrontations.

CINEMATOGRAPHY & VISUALS

Visually, Alpha looks stunning.

The cinematography captures the film’s scale beautifully, and the locations are used effectively to create a stylish spy thriller atmosphere.

The production values are top-notch, and every frame carries the signature richness associated with YRF productions.

TECHNICAL ASPECTS

• Production Design: Excellent.

• Editing: Sharp in the first half, slightly stretched in the second.

• Sound Design: Effective and immersive.

• Costume Design: Stylish and appropriate for the genre.

• Visual Presentation: Grand and cinematic.

ON THE PLUS SIDE

• Outstanding first half and interval block.

• Alia Bhatt’s committed performance.

• Bobby Deol’s screen presence.

• Strong action sequences.

• Beautiful cinematography and production values.

• Surprise cameo that elevates the theatrical experience.

• Background score and music.

ON THE MINUS SIDE

• Predictable second half.

• Several twists become easy to guess.

• Slightly slow pacing after the interval.

• Emotional moments could have been explored more deeply.

FINAL VERDICT

Alpha may not be the strongest film in the YRF Spy Universe, but it successfully establishes its own identity.

It delivers an entertaining first half, some impressive performances, stylish action, and enough surprises to keep audiences invested. The second half may not maintain the same level of excitement, but the film remains engaging enough to warrant a watch.

If you love the YRF Spy Universe, enjoy action thrillers, and appreciate strong female led stories, Alpha deserves a chance on the big screen.

For those who prefer slower-paced viewing experiences, waiting for its OTT release is also a perfectly reasonable option.

MY ONE LINER FOR THE FILM

*Alpha roars loud in its first half, stumbles slightly in the second, but still emerges as a worthy and entertaining chapter in the YRF Spy Universe.*
