Film Review: Inspector Zende

ree

Banner: Northern Lights Films Genre: Crime Drama (A)

Story & Screenplay

Inspector Zende is inspired by the true story of a police officer who re-arrested the infamous criminal Charles Sobhraj after his 1986 jailbreak. In the film, the criminal is fictionalized as Carl, while the officer is Inspector Zende.

The story, penned by Chinmay D. Mandlekar, is well-known and inherently lacks suspense for most audiences. The screenplay unfolds at a slow pace, without any standout twists or highs, leaving the narrative feeling flat. Opportunities for emotional depth are underutilized, and the dialogues, though adequate, fail to elevate the drama.

Performances

  • Manoj Bajpayee is competent as Inspector Zende, but the role offers limited scope for his talents.

  • Jim Sarbh is alright as Carl.

  • Sachin Khedekar is natural as DGP Chandrakant Purandhare.

  • Girija Oak leaves a fine impression as Vijaya Zende.

  • Bhalchandra Kadam shines as Patil, while Bharat Savale, Devang Bagga, and Harish Dudhade offer solid support.

  • Other supporting actors, including Peter Delight, Vaibhav Mangale, and Madhav Vaze, perform adequately, though most roles are brief.

Direction & Technical Aspects

  • Chinmay D. Mandlekar’s direction is ordinary and fails to sustain audience engagement.

  • Cinematography by Vishal Sinha is pleasant, capturing the settings well.

  • Music by Sanket Sane is serviceable, with one notable song; lyrics by Swanand Kirkire are passable.

  • Background score by Ketan Sodha lacks impact.

  • Action and stunts by Riyaz Shaikh and Habib Sayyed are functional but uninspiring.

  • Production design by Rajesh Choudhary is proper, while editing by Meghna Manchanda Sen could have been sharper.

Final Verdict

Inspector Zende tells a true-crime story with a famous historical case, but the execution is too ordinary to leave a lasting mark. Despite decent performances and professional technical work, the film lacks narrative tension, emotional engagement, and cinematic excitement, making it unlikely to stand out at the box-office.
