Film Review: Lokah: Chapter 1 – Chandra

ree

Banner: Wayfarer Films

Genre: Superhero / Fantasy (Dubbed)

Story & Screenplay:

This female-centric superhero story follows Chandra, an ordinary woman in Bangalore who discovers her supernatural powers and confronts illegal organ traffickers. Written by Dominic Arun, the story is intriguing, though the Kerala-specific setting limits its pan-India appeal. The screenplay, co-written with Santhy Balachandran, is engaging but uneven in pacing, with a more dynamic first half and a slower second half.

Performances:

Kalyani Priyadarshan shines as Chandra, embodying both strength and vulnerability. Naslen and Sandy provide fair support, while Chandu Salimkumar and Arun Kurian are adequate in their roles. Notable cameo appearances by Tovino Thomas, Dulquer Salmaan, and Sunny Wayne elevate the film for Malayalam audiences.

Direction & Technical Aspects:

Dominic Arun’s direction is commendable, combining superhero action with cultural nuance. Anirudh Ravichander’s music is adequate, and Jakes Bejoy’s background score complements the fantastical elements. Nimish Ravi’s cinematography and visual effects are impressive, and editing and dubbing are executed well.

On the Plus Side:

  • Strong female lead performance.

  • Solid direction with impressive visual effects.

  • Engaging story with a cultural touch.

On the Minus Side:

  • Kerala-specific narrative may not resonate with all Hindi audiences.

  • Uneven pacing in the second half.

Final Verdict:Lokah: Chapter 1 – Chandra is a well-made superhero film, though its reach in Hindi markets may be limited.
