The fourth installment in The Conjuring series, Last Rites continues the chilling tales of Ed and Lorraine Warren. This time, the Warrens investigate a haunted mirror that brings sinister consequences to the Smurl family in Pennsylvania. The story, crafted by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and James Wan, features numerous twists and suspenseful turns. The screenplay by Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing, and Johnson-McGoldrick is briskly paced, maintaining audience engagement while keeping the horror tension at an enjoyable level. While the film’s horror quotient is moderate, the drama remains absorbing throughout, balancing supernatural thrills with emotional stakes.


Performances:


Vera Farmiga delivers a compelling performance as Lorraine Warren, perfectly balancing empathy and courage. Patrick Wilson remains steady as Ed Warren, lending credibility and gravitas to his role. Mia Tomlinson brings sincerity to Judy Warren, and Ben Hardy performs adequately as her boyfriend, Tony Spera. Rebecca Calder and Elliot Cowan, along with the supporting cast, provide satisfactory performances, keeping the ensemble grounded.


Direction & Technical Aspects:


Director Michael Chaves effectively crafts an entertaining and engaging horror drama. Benjamin Wallfisch’s background score heightens the suspense, while Eli Born’s cinematography captures both the haunted settings and familial moments beautifully. Production design, editing, and dubbing are all executed with competence, making the film visually and technically polished.
