Film Review: Toaster

Introduction

Directed by Vivek Daschaudhary, Toaster is a dark comedy-drama that turns an everyday household object into the center of chaos. Produced by Patralekhaa Paul and Rajkummar Rao, the film blends absurd humor with psychological tension. With a strong ensemble cast, Toaster attempts to deliver something unconventional in the OTT space.

Screenplay & Script Sense

Written by Akshat Ghildial, Anagh Mukherjee, and Parveez Shaikh, the screenplay stands out for its unique premise. The script builds intrigue around a bizarre concept, but the narrative gradually becomes chaotic. While the dark humor lands well initially, the writing loses cohesion in the latter half.

Direction

Vivek Daschaudhary brings a fresh perspective, experimenting with tone and storytelling. His direction maintains a quirky and unpredictable vibe, but struggles to balance absurdity with clarity. The film shows promise but lacks consistent control.

Acting

Rajkummar Rao delivers a compelling performance as Ramakant, carrying the film with his versatility. Sanya Malhotra shines as Shilpa, adding emotional balance, while Abhishek Banerjee brings his signature intensity and humor. Supporting actors like Archana Puran Singh, Seema Pahwa, and Upendra Limaye enhance the narrative with strong performances.

Cinematography

The film keeps its visuals simple and grounded, focusing more on narrative progression than stylistic brilliance. The realistic setting helps highlight the absurdity of the plot.

Music & Background Score

The background score complements the film’s tone, subtly enhancing both tension and humor. It doesn’t stand out independently but serves the story effectively.

Editing

Edited by Chandrashekhar Prajapati, the film suffers from pacing issues. The first half feels engaging, but the second half becomes stretched and inconsistent, affecting the overall impact.

Production Design & Technical Aspects

Production design by Prashant Ray adds authenticity to the setting, while casting by Romil Modi ensures a well-balanced ensemble. Makeup and styling by Goswami Soamaa align well with the characters’ grounded look.

Breakdown Scale:

  • Opening Act: Fresh, intriguing, and concept-driven.

  • Mid Section: Builds humor and tension but starts losing structure.

  • Climax Build-Up: Over-the-top and chaotic.

  • Finale: Bold but divisive.

Final Verdict

Led by Rajkummar Rao’s strong performance and a unique concept, Toaster is a one-time watch that could have been sharper with better execution.

On the plus side:

  • Strong performances by Rajkummar Rao & Sanya Malhotra

  • Unique and fresh concept

  • Effective dark humor in parts

On the minus side:

  • Weak and chaotic second half

  • Inconsistent screenplay

  • Pacing issues

One Liner

Toaster starts off crisp and quirky but ends up overcooked, losing its flavor in a messy second half.
