Lust Stories is returning with a third anthology, and its newly released trailer suggests that the franchise is again interested less in conventional romance than in everything people struggle to say about relationships.

Lust Stories 3 brings together four filmmakers: Vikramaditya Motwane, Kiran Rao, Shakun Batra and Vishal Bhardwaj. Its ensemble includes Radhika Apte, Konkona Sen Sharma, Aditi Rao Hydari, Radhika Madan, Sana Thampi, Vijay Varma, Abhishek Banerjee, Siddharth, Ali Fazal and Gurfateh Pirzada. The anthology premieres on September 18.

Four Stories Rather Than One Definition of Love

The anthology format remains particularly suited to this subject because desire rarely follows a single social or emotional template.

The trailer moves between different couples, situations and stages of relationships. Attraction exists alongside awkwardness; intimacy alongside uncertainty; humour alongside emotional discomfort.

That variety is potentially more important than the provocative reputation associated with the Lust Stories title. The franchise works best when physical desire becomes an entry point into a larger conversation about marriage, autonomy, loneliness, expectation and communication.

An Unusually Strong Filmmaker Combination

The most interesting element this time may be the directors themselves.

Motwane, Rao, Batra and Bhardwaj have markedly different cinematic voices. An anthology allows those differences to become an advantage rather than something that needs to be standardised.

The cast is equally extensive. Pairing performers such as Konkona Sen Sharma, Radhika Apte, Aditi Rao Hydari, Vijay Varma, Siddharth and Ali Fazal gives each segment enough acting weight to function independently.

The real test will be whether all four stories leave a distinct impression rather than simply variations on the same theme.

If they do, Lust Stories 3 could move the franchise beyond its original shock-and-curiosity factor and strengthen its position as a recurring examination of contemporary Indian relationships.
