Film Review: DESPATCH (Hindi)

Ronnie Screwvala’s RSVP Movies’ Despatch (U/A; investigative thriller) is a film set in the world of digital journalism.

The story revolves around an ambitious but ethically grey journalist (Manoj Bajpayee) who stumbles upon a conspiracy involving corporates, crime syndicates, and media manipulation. Written by Kanu Behl, the film attempts to showcase the rot within media houses and the cost of chasing truth.

The screenplay is engaging in parts, especially when it exposes behind-the-scenes workings of the media industry. However, the narrative often gets too convoluted, with multiple subplots that dilute the central tension.

Dialogues are sharp in places, with biting commentary on media ethics.

Manoj Bajpayee delivers a powerhouse performance, balancing vulnerability and ruthlessness. He is undoubtedly the backbone of the film. Among the supporting cast, Shahana Goswami impresses, Rasika Dugal is effective, and Akshay Oberoi lends fair support.

Direction by Kanu Behl is ambitious. His handling is gritty but also indulgent, with stretches that appear verbose and over-stylised. The film appeals more to festival audiences than the mainstream crowd.

Music is minimal. Background score is atmospheric. Cinematography (by Satya Rai Nagpaul) is raw and realistic, creating an authentic newsroom and underbelly mood. Editing (Pradip Patil) could have been sharper to keep the narrative taut.

On the whole, Despatch is an intelligent but niche film. Its realistic treatment and Manoj Bajpayee’s presence will draw critical acclaim, but box-office prospects will be limited to urban multiplex circuits.
