Coolie The Powerhouse Review

Banner: Sun Pictures, Sun TV Network Ltd., Kalanithi Maran

Genre: Action (Dubbed from Tamil; A)

Story & Screenplay

Coolie The Powerhouse revolves around Deva (Rajinikanth), the leader of coolies, whose heart beats for his community. When his best friend Rajasekhar (Sathyaraj) is murdered, Deva and Rajasekhar’s daughter Preeti (Shruti Haasan) try to uncover the killer’s identity. Simon (Nagarjuna), involved in various illegal businesses, adds complexity as Deva questions whether he is a friend or foe.

Lokesh Kanagaraj’s story is long-winded and often convoluted. The screenplay, with additional inputs from Chandru Anbazhagan, is confusing at times, not merely because of numerous characters, but due to a lack of cohesion and overcomplicated tracks in the second half. Convenient plot twists, such as Deva leaving Preeti to look after Dayal, further weaken the narrative. The climax is predictable, and dialogues (by Lokesh Kanagaraj and Chandru Anbazhagan) are serviceable but not remarkable.

Performances

  • Rajinikanth performs adequately as Deva, though nothing extraordinary.

  • Nagarjuna is good as Simon, but the performance does not leave a lasting impression.

  • Shruti Haasan is capable as Preeti Rajasekhar.

  • Sathyaraj leaves a fair mark in his brief role.

  • Soubin Shahir impresses as Dayal, while Upendra is average as Kaleesha.

  • Aamir Khan adds star value as Dahaa.

  • Mahesh Manjrekar, Pooja Hegde, Rachita Ram, Kanna Ravi, Kaali Venkat, and others lend appropriate support, though performances vary in impact.

Overall, the acting is competent but does not elevate the convoluted screenplay.

Direction & Technical Aspects

  • Lokesh Kanagaraj’s direction is technically sound, though the narration fails to consistently impress.

  • Music by Anirudh is enjoyable, with the title track and party song (featuring Pooja Hegde) standing out.

  • Lyrics are appropriate.

  • Sandy’s choreography is lively, while background music is decent but could have been stronger.

  • Cinematography by Girish Gangadharan is visually appealing.

  • Action and stunts by Anbariv are thrilling but also gruesome.

  • Production design by N. Sathees Kumar is good, but editing by Philomin Raj leaves room for improvement.

  • Dubbing is commendable.

Final Verdict

Coolie The Powerhouse is an average fare. While technically competent with strong music and action sequences, the convoluted screenplay and predictable plot prevent it from leaving a significant mark at the Hindi box office. Its collections may see a boost due to the Independence Day holiday, but the film lacks lasting impact.
