Film Review: Barroz (Dubbed)

ree

Aashirvad Cinemas’ Barroz (dubbed from Malayalam) is a children’s fantasy adventure that fails to sustain adult engagement.

Story & Screenplay

Barroz (Mohanlal), cursed to guard a hidden treasure in Goa for 400 years, awaits the rightful heir to free his spirit. When young Isabella (Maya Rao West) arrives, Barroz is convinced she is the chosen one — but winning her trust isn’t easy.Based on Jijo Punnoose’s novel, the story is child-friendly but the screenplay lacks grip, often feeling episodic and uneven. The narrative is dull at times and fails to consistently hold attention. Dialogues are routine.

Performances & Technicals

Mohanlal performs competently in the lead, though without brilliance. Maya Rao West is adequate as Isabella, while Cesar Lorente Raton and others lend fair support.Mohanlal’s direction (also his debut) disappoints, with a scattered, haphazard feel. Music (Lydian Nadaswaram & team) is weak, though the background score by Mark Kilian works. Santosh Sivan’s cinematography is outstanding, and action (Jakkrit Kanokpodjananon) is thrilling. Editing is sharp, but the film still drags.

Verdict

Barroz is visually polished but narratively dull. The Hindi version will flop due to lack of awareness and poor word of mouth.
